Dear Members and Friends,
If you tuned into worship this past Sunday at 10:00 AM, you were probably surprised to see Drew McCrosson behind the communion table! I’m very grateful for Drew who filled in at the very last moment because of an unfortunate encounter I had with a piece of plate glass after Summerfest.
By the way, Summerfest went as well as could be expected, given the COVID crisis. The rides being cancelled at the last minute and the unpredictable weather… Pam and Bill Schneider (along with many many others) carried off the day! Most of our “Vendors” showed up beginning at 9:00 AM for a day in the sun along 15th St. Rose Haelfele and the Thrift Shop Volunteers worked from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM and then again from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM and had a fantastic day of sales! The Basket Auction in Fellowship Hall was also very successful (Karen Mayer and her “crew”, thank you!). And although the City did not have Family Fun Day as usual, their support of publicity and social media announcements about Summerfest was what crowned our day with so much community participation. We did not know what to expect, but we were joyfully surprised, even though the thunder and lightning shortened our day considerably.
Meanwhile, the trucks from the City were loaded with the unsold Thrift Shop items (thanks very much Jacob Haefele). Just before I planned to leave at about 9:30 AM, I noticed a glass table that had been sitting near the back door in the yard for quite some time. I decided it needed to be on one of those trucks… because we are about to have visiting Youth Mission Groups for the summer, and glass is dangerously unpredictable. As I was lifting it onto the tailgate of a truck, it broke in my hands, hit the ground in front of me and fell onto my shins, cutting both my legs. As I looked down at my bloody socks (Curt Schilling!), I thought to myself, “a band-aid is probably not going to solve this situation!”. City EMT’s Doug Brown and Juan Mejida arrived in a minute and I was at ACMC ER shortly thereafter. The kind and skilled ER Dr. Sheets gave me 53 stitches.
Annie and Elisabeth came back to AC to get me and I’ve been recovering with their help. I’m in the office and we are having New Members Classes tonight! So all is well. Thanks for the prayers.
